Soccer or football as many know it, is the most followed game on this planet – to the extent that it is a religion to many. There are people who have taken the saying eat, drink and sleep to the next level, with regards to soccer. Well, you really can’t help it, as the game is just out of this world. The fascination and complete devotion to the game can be gauged from the fact that not only do we try to emulate a player’s playing style, personal characteristics and overall take to the game, we even know the brand of shoes that he is wearing. Maybe not everyone knows but this will change that.
First of all, you should know the basics. What could the basics be in soccer shoes, you ask? The manufacturers, is the answer. There are many different types of soccer shoes out there, but what have remained constant over time are the makers. The major five include Puma, Lotto, Nike, Adidas and Reebok. While at a time, Puma and Lotto used to be all the rage, the resources that the others have poured into research swiftly turned the tide in their favour. After all, the shoes being produced nowadays are nothing less than products of science.
The shoe or studs, as they are known, that has taken the world by storm recently has been the Nike Mercurial Vapour IV. England and manchester united forward Wayne Rooney, Spain and Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos, Dutch centre-forward Jaan Klaas Huntelaar, Spain and liverpool hit man Fernando Torres, chelsea’s French winger Florent Malouda and arsenal’s Brazilian youngster Denilson are all players belonging to the Nike Laser II T90 club.
Adidas, too, has its share of stars. manchester united’s Bulgarian forward Dimitar Berbatov has never been spotted in anything other than the Adidas Predator, as is the case with liverpool and England’s midfield dynamo Steven Gerrard. Adidas’ other famous shoe line is the F50 and that also has its share of fans. Diminutive Barcelona and Argentina genius Lionel Messi, Dutch winger Arjen Robben and his compatriot Dirk Kuyt, English striker Jermain Defoe, upcoming left-back Gareth Bale and Germany’s Lukasz Podolski all wear the F50s.
As for Lotto, their major following is confined to Italy, with Inter Milan’s Dejan Stankovic being a regular user. Portugal’s Ricardo Quaresma is a user of Adidas’ AdiPure, while England and chelsea winger Joe Cole is a user of the Nike Air Legend line.

Soccer is a Great Sport For Children
Every child should grow up physically active. Not only does such activity promote good health, but it leaves our kids happier for it. Exercise releases endorphins, and the presence of them is integral in the well being of any child.
As a result, sports are a terrific physical outlet for children. They should get involved in different sports as early as they can growing up. While their favorites will be ultimately up to them, I’d like to suggest that you start out with soccer as early as you can.
This has proven to be a great activity that’s loved by kids everywhere, and there are other benefits that come with choosing soccer too. Let’s go into a few of them here.
First of all, the sport will actively build hand eye coordination in your child. Good balance skills will be built as your children dribble the ball and they’ll learn how to depend on their legs to maneuver them quickly in different directions. Since no hands are allowed to be used, this builds an even stronger sense of balance.
Leg strength is another obvious benefit. Through running around and kicking a ball across the field, their leg strength will build very quickly relative to other sports, not to mention the fact that the constant moving around the field does the same.
Lastly, this is a team sport to the fullest extent. Playing on a field with up to 10 other teammates at once will build teamwork and cooperation attributes that make your child more amenable to working with other people in all situations across the board.
Having said that, I would definitely recommend choosing soccer as a sport for your young ones if you’re in the process of deciding. There’s a very good chance that you’ll be glad you did.

Manchester United FC is Every Football Player’s Dream Club
Manchester United FC (Football Club) is one of the greatest football clubs in the world. An English Premier League football club, the home ground of MU is at Old Trafford in Greater Manchester. Manchester United FC was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath and in 1892 the club joined the Football League. Manchester United has been playing in the top division of English football since 1938. The only years it didn’t play was in the 1974-75 season.
Today, Manchester United FC is the reigning champions of the English Premier League since they won the 2008-09 Premier League Championship Trophy. It is considered as one of the most successful football clubs in the history of English football. Since 1986, the team has won 22 major honors under the guidance of Sir Alex Ferguson. In 1968, Manchester United became the first English club to win the European Cup after they defeated Benfica 4-1. They won the European Cup for the second time in 1999 followed by another win in 2008. They finished as the runner-up in 2009. Manchester United FC holds the joint record for maximum number of English league titles and FA cup wins with the former being 18 and the latter being 11.
This football team is also considered as one of the richest clubs in the world since the late 1990s. Currently, it is ranked as the most valuable as well as richest club in any sport across the world and has an overall estimated value worth £1.136 billion ($1.870 billion/EUR1.319 billion). Known to its fans as the “Red Devils”, the current manager of Manchester United FC is Sir Alex Ferguson and captain is Gary Neville.
The Manchester United club was known as Newton Heath L&YR F.C. in 1878 and went almost bankrupt in 1902. It was saved from bankruptcy by J. H. Davies who was the managing director of Manchester Breweries. The club came to be officially named as Manchester United on 26 April 1902. Davies then changed the club’s colors from white and navy to red, white and black, which is symbolic in modern football.
Since 1904, The Red Devils have been winning and losing in different seasons till Matt Busby was appointed in 1945 as the manager. Busby had innovative ideas and they paid rich dividends in the form of the club’s performance. Manchester United finished second in the English league in 1947, 1948 and 1949 and won the FA Cup in 1948. The Red Devils went on to win the league again in 1956 and at that time the average age of the players was 22. The players scored as many as 103 goals through the championship. Known as the Busby Babes and led by Duncan Edwards, they went on to win the league again in 1956-57. The team also became the first team to compete in the European Cup. Manchester United on their way to the semi-final defeated Belgian Champions Anderlecht 10-0 and till this day, it stands as their biggest ever win in any competition.
The team was nearly wiped out by the Munich air disaster on 6 February 1958 but what didn’t get wiped out was the spirit of the Red Devils. Even today, the clock at Old Trafford shows the time of the crash but since then the team was created from scratch and they went on to win the FA cup in 1963 and the UEFA Champions League in 1968.

This is what the ‘Alternate History’ genre is all about. Alternate History looks at history – this is applicable in any country of the world – and asks the question: ‘What If?’ What if British India hadn’t occurred? What would have happened if the British capital city had been built elsewhere – say, where Newcastle-upon-Tyne is today? Would that have altered the course of history? Alternate history can ask and answer so many questions – and sets your thoughts chasing off on all sorts of trails!
Alternate History
Alternate history is often alluded to as allohistory. To those aficionados of alternate history, it is frequently referred to as uchronia or uchronie which is what the French call alternate history; as parallel worlds; or even as abwegige geschichten. Regardless of which name alternate history is known by, it involves past events with their outcomes ultimately altered – and then subsequent events evolving from the altered perspective. Robert Sobel used alternate history as the primary plot in his book ‘For Want of a Nail…If Burgoyne had Won at Saratoga’. Similarly, Peter G Tsouras wrote ‘Gettysburg: An Alternate History’.
Alternate history has also been referred to as ‘counterfactuals’ which is not completely accurate: counterfactuals really relates more to academic historical research than it does to the genre of science fiction. You will find a good selection of these kinds of books in our alternate history section: One book I would particularly recommend is that written by Professor David Krasner, entitled ‘Unmaking the West: What-if?’ I am not going to say a word about this book – you will have to read it yourself!
Fantasy
Magic, the supernatural and Middle Earth: stories such as ‘The Middle Kingdom’ and the series of ‘Lord of the Rings’. Fantasy as a genre avoids the nasty and macabre – it also avoids the scientific. Fantasy is – well, pure fantasy! It’s what dreams are made of. Tolkien’s books follow the fantasy theme perfectly. Add parallel kingdoms and you have ‘The 10th Kingdom’ which is now available on DVD – and well worth watching! Add magic and you have John W. Campbell Jr and the stories he wrote for ‘Unknown’ magazine. Add destiny and you have ‘A Storm of Swords’ by George RR Martin: you will find this book on Page 5 of the Fantasy section under the Science Fiction tab on our website. It’s a good read and the 3rd volume of the six-part epic novels, ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’.
Gaming
Gaming has really come into its own since the advent of multimedia and the internet. In fact, gaming software must be one of the products being sold more and more, even during these times of recession. Believe me, once you start gaming properly, you will become hooked! It is probably one of the safer addictions to have, anyway! Today, the Games Workshop Group plc is one of the most prestigious war-games companies, listed on the London Stock Exchange. It sells war-games software and games around the world from their base in the UK. A completely different company, Game Designers’ Workshop, was also in the business of selling role-playing games and war-games from 1973 until it closed in 1996.
The vast majority of this gaming software is based on science fiction of one sort or another – time travelling, myths and legends, magic – and any other slant incorporating one or other mix of groups. In 1977 ‘Traveller’ was first introduced by the Game Designers’ Workshop: this game is now carried forward by Mongoose Publishing. In nearly all cases the games are drawn from imaginary events occurring in the far future. Rules are drawn up for the players to follow and players progress through the different levels, buying and selling equipment and weapons to progress further into the imaginary realms of the games. As a player myself, I can understand the magnetism that keeps players totally engrossed but, unless you are a games’ devotee, you wouldn’t really understand the draw gaming can have on you.

Arguably, one of the more respected science fiction films has to be ‘Contact’, starring Jodie Foster as Dr Ellie Arroway, directed by Robert Zemeckis. This film, released in 1997, was taken from the book ‘Contact’ written by Carl Sagan which you will find on our website, along with a variety of his other books: ‘Cosmos’; ‘Pale Blue Dot: a Vision of the Human Future in Space’; ‘The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark’; and ‘The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence’ – all of these books, and more, can be found on our website, under the Science Fiction banner.

There are some delightful books within this section: here, you will find ‘Orbus’ by Neal Asher. This book has echoes of ‘Star Wars’ crossed with ‘Deep Space 9′although the story it tells is all its own. Another charming book is ‘Tom’s Midnight Garden’ by Philippa Pearce – a ‘garden that shouldn’t exist’. Do you find this as intriguing as I did? If so, you will love this read – a true and classic science fiction novel to lose yourself from reality in.
