liverpool FC is not just a football team. Since the day the legendary Bill Shankly too the reigns at Anfield, liverpool FC has been different to every other team in the world. The fans became accustomed to success throughout the Shankly years, playing football the way it should be played and winning trophy after trophy at home and abroad. Even after Shankly retired this tradition – often referred to as ‘the Liverpool way’ – continued through the successes of Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Kenny Dalglish. Although the post Dalglish era has brought trophies to Anfield including an unprecedented fifth European Cup, it’s still twenty years since the Kopite saw their team lift the championship. So just what went wrong?

Dalglish – The aftermath

Kenny Dalglish is a one-off in modern football. A man who made the transition from star player, to player/<a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/category/premier-league-players/managers/"title="English Premier League Football Club Managers" >manager to manager with ease and led the side to title after title. Life immediately after Dalglish was difficult for Liverpool fans but Liverpool were still reigning champions at the time and locked in a title battle with arsenal. Despite an aging squad, this was a side still boasting the likes of John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Jan Molby, Ronnie Whelan and Ian Rush – more than capable of pushing for the title the following year. With Ronnie Moran at the helm until the end of the season Liverpool finished a distant second behind arsenal that year but looking to preserve ‘the Liverpool way’, Another passionate Scot was lined up to lead the side.

Souness

Graeme Souness was an icon at Liverpool. He returned to the club he <a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/category/premier-league-players/captains/"title="English Premier League Football Club Captains" >captained to so much glory from a successful stint as boss of Rangers and seemed the natural choice to succeed Dalglish. What did seem unnatural though, was how he quickly dismantled what was in effect a Championship winning side. Molby, Whelan, Beardsley, Nicol, Staunton and Houghton were all shown the day at barley 30 years of age. In came Dean Saunders, Don Hutchinson, Mike Marsh et al, all good players in their own right but not of the title winning caliber of those they replaced. Liverpool finished 8th that year and many fans point to this ruthless cull of one of the leagues strongest squads as a turning point in the history of Liverpool FC. Within a year, Liverpool had gone from title challengers to a mid table side. The one bright spot being the emergence of Steve Macmanaman and Jamie Redknapp.

Back to basics

Despite winning the FA Cup in ‘92, the fans and the board quickly lost patience with Souness and after suffering a serious heart attack he was replaced by one of the famous boot room – Roy Evans. Under Evans, Liverpool became know for their attacking flair and expansive style. ‘Pass and move’ was the philosophy and playing a 3-5-2 formation saw men pile forward as a young Robbie Fowler terrorized defenses. The Reds however, also became know for their soft centre and a string of defensive signings that failed to make an impact. The likes of Phil Babb, John Scales, Rob Jones, Stig Inge Bjornebye and Bjorn Kvarme all made good starts but made little difference to Liverpool’s defensive frailties. Some top four finishes and appearances in the Uefa cup gave brief hope but Evan’s side never really pushed a resurgent manchester united. In 1998, the board moved to bring in former France manager Gerrard Houllier to work along side Evans as ‘co-manager’. The idea was doomed from he start and Evans was gone before the season’s end.

The French revolution

Houllier began what he described as a five-year program to rebuild the team, starting in 1999. That summer, Paul Ince, David James, Jason McAteer, Rob Jones, Tony Warner and Steve Harkness were all sold, while Steve McManaman left for Real Madrid on a free. At the same time seven new players, Sami Hyypiä, Dietmar Hamann, Stephane Henchoz, Vladimir Smicer, Sander Westerveld, Eric Meijer and Djimi Traore were all signed. Also, Liverpool’s training facilities at Melwood were thoroughly overhauled.

The rebuilding continued the following year, with the signings of Markus Babbel, Nicky Barmby, Pegguy Arphexad, Gregory Vignal, Emile Heskey, Gary McAllister, Igor Biscan and Christian Ziege, but the departures of David Thompson, Phil Babb, Dominic Matteo, Steve Staunton (for the second time), Brad Friedel and Stig Inge Bjornebye.

The efforts yielded a result in the successful 2000-01 season, when Liverpool won a cup treble of the League Cup, the FA Cup and the UEFA Cup and finished third in the <a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/"title="English Premier League Football Club" >English Premier League. Liverpool went on to win the FA Community Shield against manchester united and UEFA Super Cup against Bayern Munich. However, Liverpool still failed to trouble the top of the Premiership and the 00/01 season was as good as it got for Houllier.

In 2002-2003 season Liverpool finished in the fifth place in the Premiership, failing to qualify for the Champions League next season. Critics blamed Houllier’s unsuccessful summer signings in 2002, namely El Hadji Diouf (Lens, £10 million), Salif Diao (Sedan, £5 million) and Bruno Cheyrou (Lille, £4 million), and his failure to make Nicolas Anelka’s loan move permanent in favour of signing the ineffective Diouf. Liverpool had gone backwards and in May 2004 Houllier left by mutual consent.

Viva le Rafa-lution

Rafa Benitez arrived on Merseyside with a big reputation. He’d led his valencia side to the La Liga title, breaking the monopoly of Real Madrid and Barcelona and when the Reds had met Valencia in Europe they were out played and soundly beaten.

The 5 year plan under Gerrard Houllier was been torn up and re-written with yet another rebuilding of the squad. However, Liverpool fans expecting the starts of that Valencia side to follow Benitez to Anfield were sadly disappointed. benitez signed a string of average players from La Liga with only Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso and Fernando Torres having any real impact.

Despite a shock Champions League win in 2005, an FA Cup and finishing 2nd in the Premier League, much of Benitez’s time at Anfield has been marked by poor transfer policy and negative team selection. Out of the 37 senior first team players Benitez has signed since arriving at Anfield, 21 are no longer at the club. Players such at Craig Bellamy and Peter Crouch were ditched while Robbie Keane’s £20m dream move from Spurs was doomed from the start.

So what has actually gone wrong?

Change. Too much, too soon. From the moment Graeme Souness overhauled a title winning squad each Liverpool manager has had a major rebuilding job on their hands but each time one rebuilds the finished article is never what it should be, leaving the next manager to rebuild a squad rebuilt by their predecessor.

Since Graeme Souness took over, Liverpool have spent £355m on transfer and recouped £179m and yet after all that money and 4 managers it looks like another rebuilding job is necessary as Liverpool currently sit in 7th place in the Premier League at time of writing having lost 7 games so far. With the American owners still promising a new stadium but offering no money to fund new players, a change of manager is not even an option this time as Benitez only signed a new 5 year contract in the summer the club simply cannot afford to part company with the Spaniard.

You can’t help but wonder whether things are going to get worse before they get better.

Last season manchester united could say they arguably had their best season for a long, long time. They produced wonder seasons for the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, helping them to win the two big titles of the season; the Premier League and the Uefa Champions League.

Along with two titles came a Premier League top scorer and World Player of the Year within manchester united’s player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo.

Once again it was chelsea applying the pressure on manchester united, coming close second in the league and the opponents in the final of the Champions League.

manchester united overcame there big rivals to finish two points ahead of the London team. In the final of the Champions League, chelsea looked like winners as the game went to a penalty shootout where only a fatal mistake by John Terry opened the Door for <a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/category/premier-league-clubs/man-utd-premier-league-clubs/"title="Man Utd\'s Staffs, Players, and News" >Manchester United to take the cup! All in all a great season for Manchester United.

Pre-season saw Manchester United play Aberdeen in their first friendly. United made a winning start to the new pre-season campaign, as goals from Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney sealed a hard-fought victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Playing many first team players such as Carrick, Rooney and Giggs.

A promising start by Aberdeen the talent and strength of Manchester United paid dividends to the English team as they comfortably won 2-0. Manchester United have three more Pre-season games scheduled, against the Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and the finally games is to be confirmed.

In the gap between seasons, Manchester United had the biggest transfer talk of the league concerning their star man, Cristiano Ronaldo! Media headlines involving millions of pounds for the Portuguese midfielder. The fate of the player is still undecided, whatever happens one thing’s for sure it will not happen quietly the media and press will be all over it so you can’t miss a thing.

Manchester United have not been the busiest in the market this year with only three players moving, two out from expired loans and one in on a short-term loan. This could possibly be down to the reason that Manchester United had so much success last season that they feel there is no need for improvement just yet!

Rumors say that Manchester United are looking into the possible signing of Robinho form Real Madrid.

But this is just a rumor who knows anything could happen! As well as interest in Robinho rumors have it that Manchester United are looking into a deal will Tottenham Hotspur, Dimitar Berbatov. Berbatov’s future at White Hart Lane has been the subject of conjecture for some time, with the 27-year-old linked with a move away from North London for much of last season. So I can understand why there is interest in the top quality striker.

One downside to the pre-season start is that Manchester United lost their main coach Scolari. So first things first a new coach needed before the start of the season.

With the world cup well underway, football fever is setting in worldwide. South Africa is abuzz and England side looks set to repeat the glory of 1966 in 2010.

Embrace an outdoor summer and support England from the comfort of your own garden with Great Universal’s Football Fever promotion. Discover everything you need to turn your garden into a dedicated ‘Football Fever Zone’ under one roof at unbeatable prices.

Invest in a petrol lawnmower or Flymo to get your lawn and garden looking great. Gather family, friends and fellow football enthusiasts for a barbecue before England take the field. Many pundits have been labelling this as England’s best chance to win the tournament for a second time. With a talented and experienced side training at what has been voted the best facility in the country, this could well be stacking up to be England’s year.

The Royal Bafokeng Campus is ultra modern and provides the additional advantage of high altitude. High altitude training could prove invaluable because it takes time to acclimatise to the lower oxygen levels in the atmosphere. The side trained in such conditions in Austria as part of their preparations for the tournament during the last few weeks. The selection of their ‘home base’ at high altitude was another masterstroke by coach Fabio Capello. By acclimatising to the conditions quicker, the England side will be guaranteed to give 100% for the full 90 minutes of every game.

Wayne Rooney leads the attack and will receive plenty of support from the midfield. Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Ashley Young and James Milner will undoubtedly supply Rooney with quality possession and could collectively out-play any team in the world. John Terry and Rio Ferdinand add solidity to the England backline, allowing Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson to play the attacking style of football they excel at. With such a talented side it is easy to see why England is being hailed as one of the favourites to clinch this year’s football showcase.

Watching the games is not optional for those unable to make the journey to South Africa. Take advantage of the summer by investing in some new garden furniture, garden accessories and a big barbecue before inviting everyone round to support the team in true English style. The side will receive great support in South Africa as a result of the Barclays <a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/"title="English Premier League Football Club" >English Premier League’s immense popularity in the country. The crowd will be awash with manchester united, liverpool, chelsea and arsenal shirts as the fans get a rare live glimpse of their heroes in the flesh.

Get behind your country – Great Universal’s Football Fever promotion provides everything you’ll need to be a star supporter from the comfort of your home. From big screen televisions to all of the outdoor furniture you could possibly need, Great Universal has it all.

William Gallas had a fallout with Mr .Mourinho and during the much publicized purchase of Ashley Cole, Gallas was offered in exchange as an icing on the cake.

Mourinho might have thought that Gallas did not do much but since he left, Cole has not yet quite filled his shoes. On the other hand Gallas is doing much more as a left back than Arsene Wenger might have ever dreamt of.

When rumors of Andriy Shevchenko’s move to chelsea reached the press, everyone including chelsea’s fans were thrilled at the thought of Andriy and Drogba teaming up. This dream just… well, just stayed a dream because we have seen nothing yet. Drogba and Shevchenko flow together the way water and fire would.

Even though this happened I myself thought the former European footballer of the year might just pull it off without Drogba but he has not adapted to the lightning quick pace of English football. We may just have to wait for a season or two before he finally clicks (I don’t think he is quite in a hurry to leave if you consider he is being paid 120,000 pounds per week).

Michael Ballack left his beloved homeland of Germany (also for the price of 120,000 pounds per week) for England to use his experience as a midfielder to help Frank Lampard in the Chelsea midfield. This seemed like another duo that would have greatly prospered together considering their talent and exposure but they just have not clicked yet. Just like Shevchenko, Ballack has also been slow to learn the English style of playing (is it something to do with their hefty wages?). For your information Ballack has already been sent off once.

The only people who seem to be consistent are the Africans who play for Chelsea. Didier Drogba has never fallen short of goals, Michael Essien is doing a good job filling in for John Terry, the young talents of Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel seem to be growing in stature day by day and not to forget the good job done by the Frenchman Claude Makelele.

PS: Have you noticed of late how Abromavich doesn’t seem as happy as he seemed before when Chelsea were winning every game? There have even been disturbing rumors that this is Mourinho’s last season at Stamford Bridge.

This version of the film was an extensive production with exotic ships, costumes, and very detailed sets, including a full-sized version of the submarine Nautilus. Of special note is the fact that the first underwater film scenes ever shown in a feature film are found in this 1916 film adaptation of Jules Verne’s novel 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea……..
Readmore

“We are going WAY back in time” 2010-06-21
By I, Da Ca$hman (Colorado)
For all my reviews visit my website [...]

I am NOT reviewing the DVD. Just the movie unless otherwise stated.

Please note that the rating above might not accurately reflect my thoughts, you will see a rating sentence at the end of the review.

Silent Movies are not the ones that you can review, it’s a one to take the experience and only if your patient. I mean, Silent Movies were not made for 2010, they were made for the early 1900’s. They can be enjoyed but only on a first person level from a very intelligent being.

There are some key things, but there are key things in every movie, and I am sick so I don’t feel like reviewing.

UPDATE: I would like to point out some key areas.

The movie is silent yes, but not all B&W. From what I’ve seen and understand, several different areas are dipped in color. The inside during the day is yellow, underwater is light blue, night is red, the jungle is yellowish-green, but it’s not real techincolor. But if you don’t like B&W but do like classics, check this out.

Of course, there is the people who do like B&W and love classics will want to see this movie to.

Night of the Living Dead (Millennium Edition) was a landmark for it’s African-American main character. However this movie has some more various main characters as well. It was 1916 so don’t expect pure love for them but still. I haven’t read the book but I know something in here that wasn’t in the book: the back story of <a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/category/premier-league-players/captains/"title="English Premier League Football Club Captains" >Captain Nemo.

This was the very first Special Effects Spectacular, and there is more to talk about, but I’m not gonna today. Maybe tomorrow, or the next day, or the next day, or the next day, or the next day.

The Rating? 3.7/5

“*Terrible* film-to-DVD transfer” 2010-02-23
By Doctor John (Miami)
I’m commenting on the “A2ZCDs” 2008 DVD release (UPC 882012439951) of this 1916 classic film. It is advertised on Amazon as a “Remastered Edition,” and it is – to the detriment of the viewer. It’s been subject to so much DNR that it cannot be watched. Apparently this is another early film now in the public domain that anybody can “remaster”, repackage, and sell on Amazon. (There’s at least one other such edition also being advertised.)

Since it is such an important early film you should purchase the 1999 Image Entertainment edition (UPC 014381466621), which appears to still available via Amazon; it looks the way you’d expect early 20th century films to look (i.e. hasn’t been digitally modified to any appreciable extent) and it’s watchable.

Perhaps some day some studio really will remaster this film – but the A2ZCD edition isn’t the One.

“jules verne fans will love it” 2009-04-04
By RORY MORDINOIA (SETI ALPHA FIVE)
If you are a die hard Jules Verne fan this is a must, however, remember this was made at the dawn of film making, so go in with an open mind. the film maker has taken many liberties with the direction of the original story, also it should be noted this is not as advertised the 1907 version of the film, it the later 1916 version. the earlier one is still unavailable. also this has been remastered from the original, the soundtrack music sounds different the picture quality could have been better, a full restoration should be undertaken on this film.

“Spectacular for its time” 2007-09-10
By Barbara (Burkowsky) Underwood (Manly, NSW Australia)
With all famous, classic stories which have been remade several times over the decades, it can be difficult not to compare one version with the other, especially when one of them was made in the middle of the silent film era. So it’s important to keep in mind that this early 1916 version of Jules Verne’s classic was a state-of-the-art superior production at that time, complete with exciting battle scenes, special effects and even the first real underwater photography. The film even opens with a credit to the two inventors of the new underwater camera, as well as a suitable little tribute to Jules Verne’s amazing foresight as he described submarines and other futuristic things half a century before they were invented. Keeping all this mind, viewing this silent version of “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” becomes a whole new adventure, and even though the underwater shots, old-fashioned diving suits and short battle scenes are humdrum for us today, they are still of good quality even by today’s standards, and must have been an exciting spectacle for audiences back in 1916.

While not entirely faithful to Verne’s original, the story is quite interesting and involves far more than just showing off the technology of the period with many underwater and submarine scenes. In fact, for a 1916 production, this film is particularly sophisticated on various levels, and with careful editing the lives of three different groups of people are related, leading to a climax which shows how all their paths cross and how they are connected. There is Captain Nemo with his mysterious quest for revenge, some balloonists who become stranded on an island where a wild girl lives, and then the man plagued by a guilty conscience who returns to this island in search of the girl. Besides some intriguing plots and drama, there is some good action (by 1916 standards, that is) including a diver wrestling a giant octopus. Together with a newly-made musical score of both piano on its own at times, then other instruments, the overall effect is of an interesting film with much variety, quite apart from its historic significance as being a pioneer of underwater photography and other exciting action effects of its time.

“A story within a story within a story” 2006-06-18
By bernie (Arlington, Texas)
Prince Daaker AKA Captain Nemo has searched 20,000 leagues under the sea for revenge. The daughter of Prince Daaker (Lois Alexander) was abducted. Prof. Aronnax (Dan Hanlon) is invited by the US navy to track sown a sea monster that is interrupting shopping. He takes his daughter (Edna Pendleton). A balloon is blown off course and carries four men to the south pacific. An evil yacht owner looks for a girl from his past. All of these stories and the story of a Child of Nature in a chic leopard skin outfit will converge on a mysterious island for the final scenario.

We find this version of 20000 Leagues Under the Sea quite different from the Disney version. The special effects are more vantage and they spend more time explaining how the physics of the underwater suits, crystal “magic window”, and underwater guns, work.

There are a few things that one must take in account for the times. Nemo looks like a goat herder. The giant octopus looks much more like the octopus in the John Wayne move Wake of the Red Witch. The underwater guns look like Winchester lever action. Where did the Child of Nature get her leopard skin? How did Nemo obtain his technology? Not the most plausible story.

There is also a long long under water filler scene. However there is excellent underwater photography by the brothers George and Ernest Williamson.

Other than that is fun to watch.
