How to Develop Your Soccer Speed

You are training for that all important soccer game and need to increase your speed, but don’t know how to go about it. Do you dream of being the next Pele or Maradona? Don’t worry! Here are a few tips for you to build up your stamina and speed and become formidable on the field!

The first important thing to remember is that developing your speed as a soccer player is not the same as developing your swimming or running speeds, because soccer is not just about running faster, it’s about thinking, reacting and adapting faster too.

First, lets get an idea of what speeds do you need to develop. You need to think faster on your feet, you need to analyze and adapt faster, you need to accelerate and change directions faster, match your speed to your opponents and learn to kick at different speeds etc.

You must remember that a fit athlete is the best athlete, so start your speed training by becoming mentally and physically fitter. Some ways in which you can develop your speed are discussed in this article.

You can practice by placing markers in two lines at slight angles between both the lines, now run from one marker to another, bend down and touch the marker, before moving on, this is good for agility and leg muscle development, you can also try this with a ball. Weaving the ball between the markers develops your speed, your leg muscles and your ball techniques too. Yes! That is how Spanish internationally acclaimed star Bojan Krkic began on his journey of 961 goals in just 7 seasons!

Divide your selves into two teams and pair up players from the opposite team. The leader of the pair runs at random around the field and the other player has to shadow their movement, keeping a minimum distance at all times. This helps you to adapt and match your speed to your opponent and develop stamina.

Before you start any work out, warming up is essential, so if you are in an open area then walk, jog, run and sprint in different speeds in a random cycle, do squats and crunches to warm up the muscles etc before you start your high intensity workout. To develop powerful core muscles, do a lot of different kind of crunches. Develop strength in your lower body, by weight training with squats, calf raises etc. It’s your mental strength and strong lower body muscles that will allow you to ‘bend it ‘like Beckham!

Along with speed you also need to develop your stamina. Stamina can be developed by regular jogging and running, weight and circuit training are also a must. You might need to use exercise equipment like a stair master, weights, treadmills and cross trainers. Stamina is basically about completing rounds of moderate activities in a monotonous speed to help preserve strength and speed. You must remember that strength and speed are useless without stamina.

Before you start your exercise routine, visit your doctor to get his advice. Also remember that it all starts in the head! So psyche your self, be prepared for a lot of hard work, don’t ever give up, and remember that nothing in life is easy, Ronaldinho or Beckham or Alexandre Pato did not have it easy! If you want to achieve greatness, then you need to work hard! All the best!
