Chelsea set to renew Michael Ballack contract
English Premier League News : Chelsea set to renew Michael Ballack contract
London (dpa) – Michael Ballack is set to be awarded with a new three-year contract at Chelsea after an outstanding season for the English Premier League club, The Times daily reported on Wednesday.
The Germany captain Ballack, 31, will be asked to stay until 2011 at Stamford Bridge, to where he moved in 2006 on a free transfer from Bayern Munich. His original contract runs until 2009 and talks on the new deal are set for after the season.
The Times said that Ballack is “likely to accept” the new offer which will effectively commit him to The Blues until the end of his career.
Ballack had a mediocre first season at Chelsea, scoring just seven goals and pondering leaving last summer after his relationship with then manager Jose Mourinho soured over an ankle injury.
He was sidelined for eight months and only returned before christmas.
Ballack has been a major factor since then under new manager Avram Grant, scoring nine goals as Chelsea reached the Champions League final for the first time and are in a neck-to-neck Premier League title race with Manchester United.

Fletcher rues Magpies draw
Manchester United Football Club News : Fletcher rues Magpies draw
Goalscorer Darren Fletcher was frustrated after United could only manage a 1-1 draw with Newcastle on the opening day of the season.
Obafemi Martins stunned Old Trafford with an excellent headed opener for the Magpies in the 22nd minute, only for Fletcher to stab home United’s leveller two minutes later.
And the Scot felt that the ideal timing of his goal should have propelled the Reds to go on and win the match against Kevin Keegan’s spirited side.
He told MUTV: “To draw the first game is disappointing. I felt we made enough chances to win the match – Shay Given pulled off some fantastic saves.
“Newcastle defended well and on the counter-attack they are dangerous because they have a lot of pace, so we had to be a bit cautious.
“It was a great leap and header from Martins, but fortunately we replied straight away, which really helps. We really thought we could push on and get the second goal, but unfortunately it never happened.”
Fletcher was nevertheless pleased with his strike, which came about after he forged into the area to get on the end of Ryan Giggs’ inviting cross.
“I’ve been making a conscious effort to get into the box because we’ve got players who can put great balls in there,” Fletcher continued.

Ryan Giggs is the club’s most decorated player with 20 major honours, yet he might never have graced Old Trafford had it not been for Sir Alex Ferguson’s intervention.
Cardiff-born Giggs was attending Manchester City’s School of Excellence in his early teens, but Sir Alex made a personal visit to his house on his 14th birthday and Ryan jumped at the chance to sign for his boyhood club.
He turned professional at United in November 1990. He made his League debut in the old Division One against Everton at Old Trafford on 2 March 1991 as a substitute for Denis Irwin. The following season his first
League start proved a memorable occasion, scoring his first ever United goal (albeit via a deflection) in a 1-0 win over Manchester City.
Injury to Lee Sharpe enabled Giggs to pin down a regular place at the start of the 1991/92 campaign, thanks to his mesmerising dribbling skills and blistering pace. His first trophy arrived in April 1992 as United beat Nottingham Forest in the League Cup final, and the following season saw Giggs claim the first of his record nine Premiership winners’ medals.
