Carling Cup Second Round vs Millwall (h) – lost 2-0.

Football League Trophy Southern Section First Round vs Leyton Orient (a) – lost 2-0.

Top Goal Scorer 2005/06: Phil Jevons (striker) – 16 goals.

Players In

Darren Behcet (West Ham United – Free), Chris Cohen (West Ham United – Free), Wayne Gray (Southend United – Free), Terrell Forbes (Oldham Athletic – Free), Steve Mildenhall (Grimsby Town – Free), Jean-Paul Kamudimba (Grimsby Town – Free),

Players Out

Phil Jevons (Bristol City – Free), Steve Collis (Southend United – Free), Colin Miles (Port Vale – Free), Michael Rose (Stockport County – Free), Dale Williams (Shrewsbury Town – Free), Chris Weale (Bristol City – Free).

Yeovil Town survived their first season in League One following their two promotions in three seasons from the Conference. The Glovers finished in fifteenth place, six points above the drop, but were one of a number of clubs that were in danger of being dragged into a relegation scrap.

<a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/category/premier-league-players/managers/"title="English Premier League Football Club Managers" >Manager Steve Thompson has been replaced with former Grimsby Town manager Russell Slade, who now gets the chance to manage in League One following the Mariners unsuccessful League Two play off campaign last season.

To make matters worse, top goal scorer for the last two seasons Phil Jevons has joined local rivals Bristol Rovers on a free transfer so the onus will be on new strike duo Wayne Gray and Jean-Paul Kamudimba who signed from Southend United and Grimsby Town respectively. As well as Kamudimba, Slade has brought in former Grimsby <a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/category/premier-league-players/goalkeepers/"title="English Premier League Football Club Goalkeepers" >goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall on a free transfer to replace Chris Weale, who, like striker Jevons, joined Bristol City.

Slade has added West Ham United duo Darren Behcet and Chris Cohen to the squad. Cohen was voted player of the season by the supporters last term after making over 30 appearances for the club on loan last season.

Paul Terry has signed a one year contract extension while Andy Lindegaard has agreed a new one year contract. Terry moved to Huish Park in 2003 following spells at Millwall and Dagenham and Redbridge while Lindegaard has made 174 appearances for the Glovers since joining in 1999.

Verdict

Yeovil finished just six points above the drop last season but have since lost top goal scorer Phil Jevons with no obvious replacement. Russell Slade is a good manager but may find himself fighting a losing battle next season. Back the Glovers at 5/2 to face the drop.

liverpool versus Inter Milan

This game is very important to both sides for entirely different reasons. For liverpool it is the only competition they can win this season and if they fail to do so then it would leave them just chasing 4th place in the league to look forward to.

For a squad that has been so expensively assembled it would amount to a great disappointment and underachievement. It would also cast a very big doubt on the future of Rafa Benitez not only for next season but for the remainder of this season as well.

Rafa Benitez has been living on the achievement of winning the champions league for far too long as there have been far too many disappointing results in games during his tenure at liverpool.

They have gone out to a second-string arsenal team in both the FA cup and League cup in the past, lost to Burnley in the FA cup, beaten by a poor Benfica side in the champions league and just recently the major embarrassment of losing at home to Barnsley.

So this game against Inter Milan gives him a chance for a bit of redemption. Speaking of redemption, Inter Milan are not just playing for themselves but also for the credibility of SerieA as well because it would not do for them to continue to dominate in Italy but losing out to liverpool in the second round of Champions league.

They are not exactly playing very well either but have been getting the results and they have been very fortunate with some decisions that have gone their way this season as well.

They have to prove to the sceptics at SerieA that they do not need referees favouring them to defeat teams and they also would like to banish the shame they brought on the game last season at Valencia where it turned into a free for all for a lot of players.

It is going to be very difficult as Anfield is a particularly hard place to go to and get a result but all depends on little things here and there.

Rafa Benitez is perhaps more tactically astute than Roberto Mancini and that might come into play but Liverpool never seem to be convincing for 90 minutes. They seem to always start well but them go into their shell and concede a goal.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic almost always seems to hide in games as big as this and it is important that other players like Julio Cruz, Esteban Cambiasso and Patrick Vieira are on their mettle.

Neither team is particularly creative in the midfield and it will be interesting to see how fragile Liverpool’s confidence really is and how Rafa can break down a well organised side or how much influence Zlatan can have on a big game.

Roma versus Real Madrid

Roma are not in good form and they would have to be at their very best to defeat Real Madrid. They have to find a way to pick the correct team for this game as Luciano Spalletti has demonstrated in the past that he is cannot pick the right team for a big game such as this.

Roma’s biggest problem is their lack of defensive nous and it is extremely important for them that Juan is back from injury as without him they would suffer.

They have creativity in abundance and they would need Ametrano Mancini, Daniele De Rossi, Rodrigo Taddei, Franceso Totti, Alberto Aquilani and Simone Perrotta to be all on their game tonight.

Real Madrid on the other hand are a very compact team and possibly the most efficient team in the world today. They still have their fragile moments in defence and their main weakness is on the flanks where both full back, Michel Salgado and Marcello are not up to the standard of Real Madrid quality.

It is a big blow that Robinho would miss this game as he has been electrifying this season and also the central midfield is not quite right to me as Guti is a very creative player but he is not mobile at all and his defensive qualities are non-existent whilst the likes of Wesley Sneidjer, Mahamadou Diarra and Fernando Gago have not been entirely convincing.

It should make for an exciting game though possibly the best of the night in terms of quality if they both play to anywhere near their maximum potential.

Olympiacos Fc versus chelsea

Olympiacos have been better than usual this season and they may just surprise chelsea in the first leg.

They do not really have many star players but have a number of excellent players that can hurt chelsea.

chelsea, it is reported in some quarters are looking to rest John Terry and Frank Lampard as they have 1 eye on Sunday’s Carling cup final but they still have a number of excellent players to come away with a win.

It all depends on <a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/category/premier-league-players/managers/"title="English Premier League Football Club Managers" >manager Avram Grant as he is almost certain to play Didier Drogba as a lone striker and Olympiacos would have to be wary of him.

Schalke versus Porto

Both teams are in good form and this particular game can go either way depending on how well Schalke can put away the chances they create tonight and if they can manage to keep a clean sheet.

Porto are leading their league quite comfortably but are not always the best travellers in Champions league. They also seem to capitulate when things are going awry but they have enough quality to snatch an away win at a very intimidating atmosphere.

Last season manchester united could say they arguably had their best season for a long, long time. They produced wonder seasons for the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, helping them to win the two big titles of the season; the Premier League and the Uefa Champions League.

Along with two titles came a Premier League top scorer and World Player of the Year within manchester united’s player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo.

Once again it was chelsea applying the pressure on manchester united, coming close second in the league and the opponents in the final of the Champions League.

manchester united overcame there big rivals to finish two points ahead of the London team. In the final of the Champions League, chelsea looked like winners as the game went to a penalty shootout where only a fatal mistake by John Terry opened the Door for <a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/category/premier-league-clubs/man-utd-premier-league-clubs/"title="Man Utd\'s Staffs, Players, and News" >Manchester United to take the cup! All in all a great season for Manchester United.

Pre-season saw Manchester United play Aberdeen in their first friendly. United made a winning start to the new pre-season campaign, as goals from Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney sealed a hard-fought victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Playing many first team players such as Carrick, Rooney and Giggs.

A promising start by Aberdeen the talent and strength of Manchester United paid dividends to the English team as they comfortably won 2-0. Manchester United have three more Pre-season games scheduled, against the Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and the finally games is to be confirmed.

In the gap between seasons, Manchester United had the biggest transfer talk of the league concerning their star man, Cristiano Ronaldo! Media headlines involving millions of pounds for the Portuguese midfielder. The fate of the player is still undecided, whatever happens one thing’s for sure it will not happen quietly the media and press will be all over it so you can’t miss a thing.

Manchester United have not been the busiest in the market this year with only three players moving, two out from expired loans and one in on a short-term loan. This could possibly be down to the reason that Manchester United had so much success last season that they feel there is no need for improvement just yet!

Rumors say that Manchester United are looking into the possible signing of Robinho form Real Madrid.

But this is just a rumor who knows anything could happen! As well as interest in Robinho rumors have it that Manchester United are looking into a deal will Tottenham Hotspur, Dimitar Berbatov. Berbatov’s future at White Hart Lane has been the subject of conjecture for some time, with the 27-year-old linked with a move away from North London for much of last season. So I can understand why there is interest in the top quality striker.

One downside to the pre-season start is that Manchester United lost their main coach Scolari. So first things first a new coach needed before the start of the season.

The European Championships kick off in Basel on Saturday 7th June where co-host nation Switzerland takes on the Czech Republic. This Group A fixture kick starts a three week long festival of football which will see 31 games being played between 16 teams across eight venues in Switzerland and Austria.

Group A looks a fairly competitive group with Portugal and the Czech Republic spearheading the bookmakers betting odds for the two teams to progress through to the knockout stages of the tournament. Portugal are the favorites to win the group having reached the final of Euro 2004, only to be beaten by Greece and two years ago they made it to the Semi Finals of the World Cup. Head Coach Felipe Scolari has a talented squad of players at his disposal and the Semi Finals should be a minimum target, whilst many pundits are tipping them to go on to win the championship. If Portugal are to have a successful tournament, much will depend on the form of Cristiano Ronaldo, undoubtedly the best player in the world at present. The Manchester United winger heads to Austria and Switzerland on the back of an English Premier League and Champions League double and if continuing his good form, he could well hold the key to help his country win their first major title.

Like Portugal, the Czech Republic will be optimistic of making it to the knockout stages of Euro 2008. They are a team with a great history of qualifying and performing well in European Championships. They booked their place at this year’s Championships in impressive style, losing just once during in qualification. They have a good blend of experienced and young players in the squad and should be threat to any team they play during the Tournament.

Turkey and Switzerland make up Group A and neither team have a great deal of experience in European finals, with just two previous appearances each. Switzerland will be hopeful of upsetting the two group favorites with home advantage; however, they may find that both Portugal and the Czech Republic are too good whilst it would be a surprise to see Turkey make anything of an impact.

Overall, Group A looks like a battle between Portugal and the Czech Republic as to which team will finish top. It may well come down to the result of the game between the two sides to determine which will have the advantage in the Quarter Final, playing the runner-up of Group B. Portugal have the better squad on paper and for that reason, look the best bet to win Group A.

With chelsea rediscovering their winning form under new coach Avram Grant, the challenge for Schalke two weeks ago was already fraught with difficulties. Another blow came when Kevin Kuranyi was ruled out just before the start with a knee injury, and with only four minutes to go, <a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/category/premier-league-players/goalkeepers/"title="English Premier League Football Club Goalkeepers" >goalkeeper Manuel Neuer committed a grave mistake that allowed Florent Malouda to score the opener.

Schalke second defeat in three games was confirmed when Didier Drogba blast a diving header into the net, though there were positives and Soren Larsen was unfortunate with a header that came back off an upright. Now Schalke must rediscover the form that enabled them to win away to Rosenborg BK on Matchday 2 as they look to improve on their previous two UEFA Champions League group campaigns in which they finished in fourth and third place.

There was a gap of 32 years before Schalke crossed swords with the English foes. It came in the first group stage of the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League when they beat arsenal 3-1 at the Arena AufSchalke. It was the final group fixture and it could not prevent Schalke finishing in fourth place while the Gunners went into the contest knowing they had already qualified.

chelsea approach this coming match knowing that a third successive group win would assure them of a place for the fifth successive season if Rosenborg secured a second victory away at Valencia.

Stuttgart were <a href="http://www.premier-league-football.com/category/premier-league-clubs/chelsea/"title="Chelsea FC Staffs - Players - News" >Chelsea’s opponents in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final when Gianfranco Zola’s goal in Stockholm was enough to give Chelsea the trophy for a second time.
