Manchester United Season Preview 2008/09

Last season manchester united could say they arguably had their best season for a long, long time. They produced wonder seasons for the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, helping them to win the two big titles of the season; the Premier League and the Uefa Champions League.

Along with two titles came a Premier League top scorer and World Player of the Year within manchester united’s player of the year Cristiano Ronaldo.

Once again it was chelsea applying the pressure on manchester united, coming close second in the league and the opponents in the final of the Champions League.

manchester united overcame there big rivals to finish two points ahead of the London team. In the final of the Champions League, chelsea looked like winners as the game went to a penalty shootout where only a fatal mistake by John Terry opened the Door for Manchester United to take the cup! All in all a great season for Manchester United.

Pre-season saw Manchester United play Aberdeen in their first friendly. United made a winning start to the new pre-season campaign, as goals from Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney sealed a hard-fought victory over Aberdeen at Pittodrie. Playing many first team players such as Carrick, Rooney and Giggs.

A promising start by Aberdeen the talent and strength of Manchester United paid dividends to the English team as they comfortably won 2-0. Manchester United have three more Pre-season games scheduled, against the Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and the finally games is to be confirmed.

In the gap between seasons, Manchester United had the biggest transfer talk of the league concerning their star man, Cristiano Ronaldo! Media headlines involving millions of pounds for the Portuguese midfielder. The fate of the player is still undecided, whatever happens one thing’s for sure it will not happen quietly the media and press will be all over it so you can’t miss a thing.

Manchester United have not been the busiest in the market this year with only three players moving, two out from expired loans and one in on a short-term loan. This could possibly be down to the reason that Manchester United had so much success last season that they feel there is no need for improvement just yet!

Rumors say that Manchester United are looking into the possible signing of Robinho form Real Madrid.

But this is just a rumor who knows anything could happen! As well as interest in Robinho rumors have it that Manchester United are looking into a deal will Tottenham Hotspur, Dimitar Berbatov. Berbatov’s future at White Hart Lane has been the subject of conjecture for some time, with the 27-year-old linked with a move away from North London for much of last season. So I can understand why there is interest in the top quality striker.

One downside to the pre-season start is that Manchester United lost their main coach Scolari. So first things first a new coach needed before the start of the season.

Where Does Manchester United Go From Here?

Without doubt, Manchester United is one of the most exciting and consistent football teams ever to grace the turf.

With two titles already under their belts this season, there is still the potential to make that in to four, with the Premiership and European Champion`s League titles still to play for.

True, at times they`ve looked jaded, a result of playing so many matches during the season. And, to remain successful United will have to continue to bring good young players through the system, and probably to enter the transfer market when the window opens at the end of the season.

Sir Alex Ferguson will certainly be at the club next year, but what after that? He`s one of the most successful managers of all time. Whenever he does retire, his successor has a tall order to keep the club at the level we`ve seen over the past decade.

And, what about the tried and trusted players who have served Manchester United so magnificently over the years? Scholes, Beckham, Giggs, Butt and the Neville brothers were synonymous with the United success of much of the 1990`s. Of those, only Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, and Ryan Giggs remain. When outfield players reach their mid-30`s in football most are generally in the final part of their playing days, and contracts tend to be given on just a year-by-year basis.

Paul Scholes recently played his 600th game for the Reds against Portsmouth. Scholes is a `players player`- his talent recognized by other players, managers, and fans alike. Giggs now tends to come on as substitute (a very good substitute at that), and Gary Neville has been beset by injuries since last season, and is struggling to find his old form.

Michael Carrick is reliable in midfield, Patrice Evra at left back, and Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic as centre halfs are rock-like in defence. Following his knee surgery in November 2008, Owen Hargreaves should be back next season. Edwin van der Sar has another season left on his contract, though Ben Foster is a good goalkeeper, a future England keeper many reckon.

The rumours surrounding the `will he/won`t he` transfer to Real Madrid of Cristiano Ronaldo persist. And as good as Fletcher, Nani, Ji-Sung Park, and Anderson are, none of them have yet shone as consistently great players.

If Ronaldo does leave, Manchester United won`t only lose a midfield player, they`ll lose a striker too, who`s one of the best goal scorers there is. And with Carlos Tevez seemingly still undecided about his future at Old Trafford, the strike force of the experienced Berbatov and Rooney may not be enough. Having said that of course, youngsters such as the Da Silva twins, Jonny Evans, Darron Gibson, Danny Welbeck and the very confident Federico Macheda are all excellent future prospects for Manchester United.

The problem may be the gap that could be created by the loss of the current experienced-but getting on in years-senior players, and the youngsters who are coming along. Fergie hasn`t let Manchester United down thus far. Where do United go from here? Hopefully onward and upwards, but only time will tell.

Cristiano Ronaldo Pictures An Improved Performance Next Season At Manchester United

Manchester United’s player of the season last year, Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo has recently struck more fear in to the hearts of opposing Premiership defenders by stating that he pictures an even better season for the newly crowned Premiership Champions.

Cristiano Ronaldo was by far the best player for Manchester United last season, and was also the best player in the whole of the Premiership, scoring 23 goals on his way to securing the Premiership trophy for the Man Utd team. Ronaldo was also voted both PFA Young Player Of The Year, and PFA Players’ Player Of The Year – an achievement in itself.

Despite the personal success last season round for Ronaldo, the young Portuguese star has now said that he would like to play even better for the Old Trafford side, and would like to beat last season’s record of 18 Premiership goals – which was third behind Benni Mcarthy’s 19 goals and chelsea Striker Didier Drogba’s 20 goal-haul.

Ronaldo went on to say “I have been in England for four years now. In my first season, I scored seven goals, in my second I scored nine, then 12 and last season I got 23. I try to improve every season”.

It is quite hard to see how Cristiano Ronaldo can perform better next season at Manchester United, seeming as he played so well last season. Perhaps he will link up even better with his team-mates since the arrival of old Portuguese friend, left-winger Nani. Another new arrival is Brazilian central midfielder Anderson, and English central midfielder Owen Hargreaves. If the prolonged Carlos Tevez saga is ever resolved then the Argentinean striker might also help to improve the Man Utd team, which could in turn help Ronaldo to perform even better.

One thing which is certain is that Cristiano Ronaldo will try his best to improve both his goal scoring record and his own performances next season. The young winger has already joked with Sir Alex Ferguson about making another bet regarding how many goals he scores – this time the loser is apparently going to shave all their hair off. It is unseen whether Sir Alex or Cristiano would be willing to do this should their bet lose – so I’m sure either way he will see Ronaldo improving again as a footballer when the next season kicks off.

He had a difficult time with the directors as the deal is said to have made Manchester United $850 million poorer but an even tougher job with the fans. Fans do not want to see their team in the hands of a tycoon and were fearful of the future under Malcolm Glazer. Initially many fans protested by not renewing their season tickets and songs about Glazer can still be heard today around the stands.

Today the club seems to be moving forward faster than it has ever done before. In 2006/2007 season Manchester United reclaimed the Premier League title from their arch rivals chelsea and in 2008/2009 won both the Premiership title and also the UEFA Champions League. The fan base is growing at an alarming rate and thanks partly to the fortunes and developments of Malcolm Glazer the club can bring in some of the best players on the world stage. It is thought that for the foreseeable future Manchester United will remain one of the greatest names in world football.
